The Weeknd (born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) is a Canadian singer, songwriter and record producer. He was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Canada. He began his career in 2010, releasing music independently under the name The Weeknd. He gained widespread recognition in 2011 with the release of the mixtape "House of Balloons", which was critically acclaimed and earned him a nomination for the Polaris Music Prize. The Weeknd has released several more mixtapes, albums, and singles throughout his career, including "Kiss Land" (2013), "Beauty Behind the Madness" (2015), "Starboy" (2016), "My Dear Melancholy," (2018) and "After Hours" (2020) which have been critically acclaimed and commercially successful. He is known for his unique R&B sound, which incorporates elements of alternative, electronic and hip-hop music, and his emotive and powerful vocal performances. He has also won several awards, including three Grammy Awards, eight Billboard Music Awards and nine Juno Awards.
