Suede, also known as The London Suede in the US, is an English rock band that originated in London in 1989, initiated by vocalist Brett Anderson, guitarist Justine Frischmann, and bassist Mat Osman. The band, inspired by glam rock and post-punk, earned the label "The Best New Band in Britain" by Melody Maker in 1992 and captured significant interest from the British music press. In 1993, their debut album, "Suede", soared to the top of the UK Albums Chart, marking the fastest-selling debut album in nearly a decade. The album garnered the Mercury Music Prize and helped propel 'Britpop' as a genre, although the band themselves did not associate with the term. Their second album, "Dog Man Star", saw its recording sessions marred by disputes and the departure of guitarist and composer Bernard Butler. However, Richard Oakes filled the vacancy and the album, although initially not a commercial hit, received critical acclaim over time and is now considered a masterpiece in rock music. In 1996, with the addition of keyboard player Neil Codling, the band released "Coming Up" which climbed to number one in the UK and birthed five top ten singles, making it Suede's best-selling album globally. Despite internal issues, their fourth album, "Head Music" (1999), also topped the British charts. It received vast press coverage upon release, but failed to garner the same enthusiasm from fans and critics as previous records. Following the departure of Codling due to chronic fatigue syndrome in 2001, Alex Lee stepped in. The band's fifth album, "A New Morning" (2002), failed to impress commercially and critically, leading to the band's dissolution in 2003. Brett Anderson briefly reunited with Butler to form The Tears in 2004, before embarking on a solo career in 2006. After much anticipation, Suede reunited in 2010 for several concerts, and released their sixth album, "Bloodsports", in 2013 to positive reviews and a return to the UK's top ten. Their following albums, "Night Thoughts" (2016) and "The Blue Hour" (2018) continued to gather commercial and critical success, with the latter becoming the band's first top five record since "Head Music". Their most recent album, "Autofiction", was released in September 2022.
